Google Office and Writely so!

Friday, March 10th, 2006
GoogleThe ever evolving Google has taken over a new start up company called ‘Writely‘. “Writely allows you to edit documents online with whomever you choose, and then publish and blog them online.” This seems to be part of google’s plan to enter the ‘office’ market, currently dominated by Microsoft. It already offers a 2 Gb e-mail service called gmail and soon, maybe a new service called ‘gdrive’ which information about was leaked by google to the internet in error. Gdrive would let users store the contents of their computers for free!

On google’s weblog For the last five months, I’ve been part of a Silicon Valley startup called Upstartle, which makes Writely, a collaborative word processor that runs in a web browser. Well, as of Monday, I’m happy to say that I, and the rest of the Writely team, are now part of Google”. DO

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

Windows LiveMicrosoft has launched a new search website as part of their web-based services windows users. Live.com is a clean design and hopes to keep Microsoft in the search engines wars. Now while live.com is as easy to remember as google.com, a clever move on Microsofts part, it may not be smooth sailing for the website.
Windows Live

The engine is the same as the MSN (search.msn.com) one, so no differences in the results as of yet. As regards the User Interface, however, they have introduced a fun looking way to navigate through the search results. It does look well as a design, but is a bit of a pain to use. After a few searches on the system, it get’s annoying. It may be a step in the right direction for the company though, as it promises windows users; more web-based features in the Future. DO

MacApparently gaining root access to a Mac is “easy pickings”. In other words its easy to hack!

ZDNet website reports on how a ‘Mac Nut’ set up his mac mini computer as a server using the famous OS X system and invited people to take it over as a part of a competition . And within hours the competition was closed and the server was hacked!

“It probably took about 20 or 30 minutes to get root on the box. Initially, I tried looking around the box for certain misconfigurations and other obvious things, but then I decided to use some unpublished exploits — of which there are a lot for Mac OS X,” Gwerdna told ZDNet Australia.
