TV3 and ITV - Legal Case

Tv3 irelandTV3 ireland has begun a legal case againset it’s shareholder ITV. The company (ITV) owns 45 percent of the TV3, and the legal case is over rights to certain television shows including soaps like Coronation Street.

The move comes after ITV has become free to Air Channel, meaning that the public can view ITV Channels, including UTV on SKY Digital, in Ireland this is through the ADD Channels feature.

What this actually means for TV3 is that it’s content can now be view on another Channel, and as most of this content is from UTV, “this would damage advertising revenues considerably”, a source told Digital Orbit. Especially when you consider that, most of TV3’s viewers tune in using the SKY Digital Platform. Although UTV is availabe to all other suscribers such as Chorus and NTL Ireland, the case seems unaffected by this. It is thought that the comapy is seeking to have the ITV Channels scrambled in Ireland, Although ITV 3 and ITV 4 will most lightly not be affected for Irish viwers.

A Leading Law firm Clifford Chance in London is persuing the case for the company.
